In case the sericulture project being taken up in Manipur with financial assistance from the Japanese Government can be properly implemented, the project can boost the State's economy in a big way, stated MLA Okram Landhoni while speaking as chief guest in the closing function of the Silk Exhibition cum Cocoon Mela at Kangla Hall today.
She remarked that sericulture can pave way for economic development and peace in the State if people take up and join the project.
Landhoni observed that though sericulture could not take off in Manipur earlier because of technological problems and failure of due attention to this industry, people can take advantage of the availability of modern technology and improve their alleviate their economic status by turning to sericulture.
As the designated period of the first phase of the sericulture project expires in March next year, the State Government has written to the Japanese authority to extend the period.
The State Government is still unable to fully utilise the Rs 134 crores sanctioned for the first phase, disclosed the MLA.
She further assured that besides extending all possible help from her side, she will seek due attention of the Chief Minister towards development of sericulture industry in the State.
The closing function of the two day Mela was also addressed by Chairperson of the Social Welfare Advisory Board RK Bibita and MPCC vice-president AK Mirabai.
