MSCW team puts heat on Nekhohat murder case

Imphal, May 17 2013 : A team of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) led by its chairperson Dr L Ibetombi conducted an investigation into the murder case of Nekhohat Kilong yesterday.

The team went to late Nekhohat Kilong's home at Moreh Ward No 9 and interacted with her father.

They also talked with officers of Moreh police station.

Assisted by Moreh police, the team went to the spot where Nekhohat Kilong was found murdered.

Nekhohat (25) was found murdered by the side of NH 2 just about one Km away from Moreh PS on May 7 .

Dr L Ibetombi said all the efforts put in by police and other stake-holders to nab the murderer(s) so far are not satisfactory.

One Vijay who is said to be the main accused in the murder case of Nekhohat Kilong is a worker of BRTF.

He is known to be a native of Jharkhand and there would not be any difficulty in pulling up Vijay because BRTF is a well established institution.

Dr Ibetombi said that they would continue with their investigation into the murder case of Nekhohat.

The other members of the team who visited Nekhohat's family included MSCW Member H Piteshwari, Member Secretary S Meghachandra and other staff of the Commission.

They also extended certain amount of monetary aid to bereaved family.

Even as police are unable to pull up any accused in the murder case of Nekhohat Kilong, her mother has a burning desire to see the murderer(s) of her daughter given capital punishment.

Talking with The Sangai Express, Nekhohat's mother Hoinu Haokip said, "My daughter was killed by her husband Vijay.

He used to thrash her most mercilessly on several occasions" .

"Vijay dragged my daughter grabbing her hair and he killed and abandoned her by the road side," the bereaved mother alleged.

Thus talking about her daughter with teary eyes, Hoinu Haokip was feeding bottled milk to her one year old grandson left behind by Nekhohat.

One spade and slippers worn by Nekhohat were recovered from the spot where Nekhohat was found murdered.

According to Moreh police, Nekhohat's death was a clear case of murder.

They also admitted that they are unable to pull up Nekhohat's husband Vijay who is suspected to the main accused.

Police have no idea where Vijay is at present and they are still awaiting the post mortem report.

FIR No 24 (5) 2013 has been registered at Moreh PS along with registration of a case under IPC Section 302 .

The police officer said that they have written to BRTF to give details of Vijay and they have responded positively.

According to the details given by BRTF, Vijay is a native of Jharkhand state.

Subsequently, Moreh Police are working to take up the matter with the concerned police station of Jharkhand, said the police officer.

Even though the police officer claimed that BRTF has given them the home district and exact address of Vijay to them, he refused to divulge the details.

Nekhohat Kilong's father Seikhojen (60) said that Vijay and her daughter got married about three years back.

They took up their residence at Mortuk under Tengnoupal police station.

About two weeks ahead of the day Nekhohat's murder, the couple came to Seikhojen's home and stayed there.

Three days before Nekhohat was found murdered, Vijay left Seikhojen's house and he could not be traced.

On May 6, Nekhohat went out for MGNREGS work but she was accosted by Vijay on the way.

Vijay dragged her by the hair on the road and the whole scene was witnessed by all the villagers who came out for MGNREGS work.

That night neither Nekhohat nor Vijay came back.

It was on the next morning Nekhohat was found murdered mercilessly, Seikhojen recounted in a choking voice.

Before his marriage to Vijay, Nekhohat was married to a Bihari man.

From his first marriage, Nekhohat had a son.

Her first husband was an alcoholic and he died due to alcohol related infections.

Later, after she had returned to her parental home, Nekhohat and Vijay got married.

For the two sons left behind by Nekhohat, they have no one else except their old grand-parents to look after them.

Seikhojen family is living in abject penury if their small one-room house is any indication.

Seikhojen is a victim of paralysis and he could not move his right leg properly.

Nekhohat's youngest son was very thin due to malnutrition.

"I cannot go out to earn any sum of money for I'm always preoccupied with baby-sitting my two grandsons", said Hoinu Haokip.

"I could not even provide a glass of milk to my grandsons for I was penniless.

But these days, the kids are being given milk as some religious leaders have me milk and sugar", Hoinu said.

Saying that they (Seikhojen and Hoinu) are not in a position to groom their grandchildren properly, Hoinu sought assistance from the Government.

Demanding that the murder of her daughter should be awarded capital punishment, Hoinu said that non-local people like Vijay are dreadful.

Hoinu and Seikhojen has three daughters and two sons but three died due to some illness in their childhood while Hoinu was murdered mercilessly this month.

They are left with only one son who is working in a private company outside Manipur.
