Imphal, April 15:
United Naga Council (UNC) president Puni Modoli has resigned from his post on health ground and that the federal assembly of the UNC has accepted Modoli's resignation on April 3, according to the delayed statement of the UNC.
Following the development the United Naga Council will be holding its "by-election" for the post of the Naga body president on April 28 at Senapati.
Meanwhile, the election commission for the by-election of the UNC has informed NNN that all the constituent tribe, hohos and district apex bodies of UNC, executive and assembly affairs of UNC, Naga Women's Union, Manipur (NWUM), Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) and All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) that, as per the decision of the UNC assembly of April 3, Senapati, a three member election commission of the UNC by-election for the post of its president was constituted with ANSAM president Paulhring Langhu as the election commission's chairman.
It further informed that the last date for the submission of the nomination papers from the intending candidates is 4 pm of April 27 and the last date of the withdrawal of the same is 10 am of April 28.The election will be held at 12 noon of the slated date.
Meanwhile, the Chandel Naga Peoples Organisation (CNPO) has srongly condemned the planting of a hand grenade at the premises of MP Mani Charenamei few days ago.
The CNPO termed the incident as an attack on the tribal people in general and the Nagas in particular.The CNPO appealed the culprits not to repeat such things in future.
