Imphal, December 12: The first anniversary of the Manipur State Commission for Women was celebrated today in Imphal West DC Office complex with former Minister Dr M Nara as chief guest.

Giving keynote address of the function MSCW Chairperson Dr Ch Jamini recalled that after an Act was passed by the State Assembly in 2006, the Commission was formally put into operation with the appointment of Chairperson and members on December 12 last year.

Taking the date of December 12 on which the MSCW was formally put into operation, the Commission is celebrating its first foundation day anniversary today, she said.

It is heartening to celebrate the foundation day on the historic day of Women's War of 1939.Offering fitting tributes to the brave mothers on this date is also enhancing the significance of the MSCW foundation day observance, Jamini noted.

She said that domestic violence and crimes against women has been increasing in the State.

In its first year of existence, the Manipur State Commission for Women has conducted public hearing twice.

The MSCW has also organised awareness programmes on women's health and legal services at Jiribam, Kwatha, Moreh and other places.

After the awareness programmes were conducted, many cases of violence against were reported from these places.

The Commission on their visit to these villages noted their basic requirements for which remedial measures were recommended to the relevant State Departments, the Chairperson said.

But in most cases, the recommendations were not implemented, she added.

Emancipation of women is closely related with proper and timely implementation of development programmes and welfare schemes on the part of the Government, she observed.

On the occasion of the Commission's first anniversary, the first publication of the bi-annual journal "Voice of Women" was also released by Dr Nara.

Stating that Women's Commission is a body with huge potential, Dr Nara asserted that the people of Manipur wish to see its potential exploited for the upliftment of women.

He also called upon all the people of Manipur to make sincere efforts so that the Commission can live up to its expectation.
