Imphal, November 20: The Shumang Leela Ningtham Kumhei, 2005 being organised by Manipur State Shumang Leela Council has begun from today at Th Iboyaima Shumang Leela Sanglen, Palalce Compound here.

Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function, PDA Chairman K Ranjit said that other States are always trying to suppress Manipur and the biased attitude of the referee toward the Manipur team in the recent quarter final match of the Santosh Trophy played with Goa was yet another glaring example.

Pointing out the significance of Shumang leela, Ranjit said it is the one of the art forms which could educate and open the eyes of the people to the ills afflicting the society.

So every efforts should be made to preserve and develop this art form, he exhorted.

MANITRON Chairman Bijoy Koijam presided over the inaugural function attended by Manipur State Pollution Control Board Chairman N Biren and Manipur State Kala Akademi secretary Kh Sorojini Devi as guests of honour.

All those who were present at the occasion paid their respect to well-known Shumang Leela artiste Samurailatpam Debdutta, who passed away recently by observing two minute silence.
