Students from the North East studying at Delhi University lodged a strong protest against the purported statement given by the acting vice president of Kirorimal College of the university, Birendra Kumar wherein he said that students from the North East region too should join the mainstream and girl students from this region should wear salwar kameez to stop them from being molested or raped.
The acting vice principal of the college gave this statement in an interview to The Times of India.
The vice principal is understood to have stated that the recent incident of the rape of a girl from the North East would not have occurred if she was attired in a salwar kameez.
Infuriated over the statement of the vice principal, around 35 members of the Manipur Students Association, Delhi ransacked the office of the vice principal at about 2 am today, said the president of the student body, Rojesh Kumar.
The students were lathi charged by the police.
As morning descended at Delhi today, a large number of students from the North East converged and staged a dharna in front of the office of the VC.
The students demanded an unconditional apology from the vice principal.
The vice principal said that he was sorry if his statement had hurt the sentiments of the students from the North East.
However the NE students demanded a written apology from Birendra Kumar within five days time.
