Chief Minister urges Thoubal district voters

Imphal, December 29 2011: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has sought the support of Thoubal district voters to ensure success of Congress nominees in all the 10 Assembly segments spread across the district.

Addressing an election rally organised today by Wangjing-Tentha Block Congress Committee at Tekcham High School ground, the CM appealed to the voters to back the Congress party so that elected representatives from Thoubal district could play the leading role in the formation of the next Government as well as in the execution of policy programmes.

Noting that Congress candidates suffered defeat in two assembly constituencies of the district at the previous Manipur Legislative Assembly election, he fervently appealed to the electors to exercise their democratic right for the success of all the Congress nominees.

Conveying to the people that a stable Government by the Congress party is a necessity for protecting the territorial and emotional integrity of Manipur, Ibobi asserted that only a stable Government would be able to tackle all adversary elements.

Pointing out that the Congress party firmly believes in the principle of non-violence, he also appealed to all concerned to refrain from barring entry of contesting candidates at a particular locality as such a prohibition is an affront to the basic principle of democracy.

Maintaining that he is against the concept of lashing out at rival candidates, the Chief Minister also suggested that elections fought in a peaceful manner would further enrich the democratic principle.

Conceding that all out effort to complete the Thoubal Multi-purpose Project ahead of the official announcement of election code of conduct has not materialised, he nevertheless informed that on completion of the project people's aspiration for food security through extensive agricultural network would be a reality.

While voicing strong resentment against imposition of frequent bandhs and blockades in the State, Ibobi also attributed such disruptive agitation as one of the chief factors for the delay in completing various development projects.

He pledged to the gathering that the Congress party will accord top priority in finishing pending projects.

Speaking at the occasion, MPCC president Gaikhangam contended that with the election date nearing its day of polling several individuals have been conveying their desire to contest the election on Congress ticket.

Among those seeking Congress party tickets many are sitting MLAs from the opposition parties, he claimed while pointing out that allotting Congress tickets is based on the principle that the individual concerned should be a Congress member for no less than three consecutive years.

Disclosing that some aspiring candidates from Wangjing Tentha AC had been lobbying for Congress ticket, Gaikhangam asserted that providing party ticket to individuals other than the sitting Congress legislator is very remote.

Local MLA M Hemanta, who also addressed the gathering, highlighted that the Congress-led SPF Government had been able to convince the Central Government grant various development projects for Manipur and affirmed that under the leadership of Chief Minister Ibobi Singh, the Congress party will return to power in the State.
