The Women and Children Welfare Council, Imphal has voiced strong opposition to the demand of All Tribal Students� Union, manipur (ATSUM) pertaining to 50 percent reservation for scheduled tribes candidates in Government jobs.
According to a press release of the Council, which was also submitted to the Chief Minister, Manipur Government need not act in a hasty manner so as to please a particular section of the society keeping in mind multi-community composition of the manipuri society.
While endorsing the Central government and the Indian Constitution guaranteeing certain percentage of reservation for the scheduled tribe and scheduled caste communities, the Council nevertheless referred to the Supreme Court decree regarding restriction on job reservation not to exceed 50 percent for all reserved communities.
In case the ATSUM demand for 50 percent reservation is conceded what would befall upon other non-general category like Scheduled Castes and other Backward Classes (OBC), posed the body.
Cautioning the State Government against acting in a hasty manner, the Council opined that in an attempt to win over a particular section of the society the remaining section belonging to socio-economically unsound category should not be made to suffer or be discriminated against.
Insisting that before the ATSUM demand is considered people of various communities should be consulted and their consent sought, the Council also asked political organisations to declare their stand on the contentious issue.
