With the President of India having given his assent, the Manipur State Commission for Women Act, 2006 has come into force in the State with effect from July 11, though the Government is yet to institute a Commission in this regard till date.
However, a source from the relevant department said that the Government has taken up all possible measures for setting up the Commission soon.
A person who is committed to the cause of women would be nominated as chairperson of the Commission, while three others who have experience in the field of social work, administration and laws related to woman cause as members, the source said adding that atleast one of the members should be from ST/SC communities.
The term of the Commission is 3 years.
Main functions of the Commission include examination of the laws related to safeguarding the rights of the women as guaranteed by the Constitution of India, to give necessary recommendations to the State for effective implementation of these laws and investigate cases of violation of rights of women.
Promotional and education research work for improvement the status of women also come under the ambit of the Commission.
With the help of the appropriate authority, the Commission can also take up cases related to violation of the provisions given in the Constitutions and other legal bodies for safeguarding the rights of the women.
The Commission can also issue summon to person living in any part of the country for examination in connection with such cases.
