After several buildings of different educational institutions have been discovered constructed without maintaining proper quality, hostel of Deaf and Mute School run by Social Welfare Department has been found constructed in sub-standard manner.
A team of DESAM volunteers who inspected the hostel today has cautioned that the hostel will be dismantled in case it is not repaired within a month.
The hostel built at the cost of Rs 1.57 crore is yet to be inaugurated even though construction work has been completed.
During the inspection drive, cracks were observed on the first floor of the building.
Tiles laid in the toilets could also be detached by hand.
Besides leaks on the roof, the ground floor was also found pressed down.
Construction work of the hostel began in 2005 and it was completed in 2007 after the requisite amount was deposited at Technical and Planning Cell (TP Cell) of the Cooperation Department by the Social Department.
Enraged over the condition of the building, students and volunteers of DESAM tore down some of its portions.
The building will be razed down in case the authority concerned do not repair the building within a month, cautioned DESAM social welfare secretary Aribam Anand.
He further appealed to the authority to take up befitting actions against the engineers and contractors involved in the construction of the building.
Earlier run by an NGO, the school was taken over by the Government in 1979.The school having more than 76 students.
Besides the syllabi prescribed by BSEM, other special subjects are also being taught in the school.
Headmistress in-charge of the school G Sanatombi conveyed her reservation to keep students in the hostel.
She said that the higher authority was informed of the sub-standard nature of building the hostel.
On the other hand, of the two hostels (boys' and girls') built in Government Ideal Blind School, one has been completed while the other remains incomplete due to tussle for the contract work, informed a source.
Meanwhile, DESAM has urged upon the authority concerned to repair the boys' hostel within a month and also to complete the girls' hostel.
