Imphal, August 18:
Chairman of Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) E Dwijamani has appealed to all concerned not to set up any health care units in the State without the authorisation of the Board.
In continuation of his inspection on management and handling of biomedical waste by the health care units, the Board Chairman and officials today went to inspect RIMS, JN Hospital and Chamber of Commerce.
Director in-charge of RIMS Prof TY Babu, Superintendent in-charge Th Tomcha and convenor of Waste Committee Dr Somorendra accompanied the Board Chairman during the inspection of the RIMS hospital.
Waste Committee convenor Dr Somorendra informed that 45,000 kg of bio-medical waste are produced in a month from RIMS and the same are disposed off through the methods of incineration or deep burial.
After the inspection, the Board Chairman said although the right method of disposal of bio-medical waste is being followed in RIMS, there seem to be lack of awareness on colour-coding system of waste disposal.
After the inspection of JN Hospital, the Board Chairman observed that without adopting the incinerator, the old method of disposal of bio-medical wastes is being practised in the hospital.
It is really unfortunate that despite sanctioning of the required fund by the Central Government, the authority of the JN Hospital could not make necessary arrangement for installation of an incinerator leading to forfeiture of the fund, the Board Chairman said.
Taking serious note of not conforming to the laid down guidelines of Pollution Board in connection with disposal of biomedical waste, the Chairman directed the Superintendent of JN Hospital W Motilal for imparting necessary training to the doctors and nurses of the hospital in this regard.
As for Chamber of Commerce, which is a private hospital, the Chairman maintained that the manner of disposing human issues at Hatta crematorium is not appreciable.
