Imphal, February 18, 2010: Twenty days after the gruesome murder of Angom Chanbi w/o late Khomei and her daughter Meneka, police investigation into the twin murder is leading to nowhere as of now.

The mother-daughter duo were called out from their home at Phayeng Nongaban by some unidentified persons in the intervening night of January 12 and 13 on the pretext of talking to their 'elders'.

The 35 year old mother and the 17 year old daughter were found brutally murdered at a paddy field on January 23. Angom Meneka was reading in class IX at Phayeng Don Bosco.

Even as Lamsang police registered a case and are investigating into the case, very little progress has been achieved so far.

In the course of the investigation, police have taken statements of around 15 people including brothers and relatives of late Khomei.

They included five suspects and they were duly interrogated.

But at the end, no hint of their involvement in the double murder could be established, said the officer in-charge (OC) of Lamsang police station.

In the process of questioning the five suspects, it was learnt that three of them were involved in theft cases and other small crimes in the locality.

While the remaining two have been freed, the three individuals have been sent to judicial custody after an FIR was registered against them under IPC Section 384/34. The three individuals sent to judicial custody are Angom Suniljoy (25) s/o Khomei, Angom Nanao (24) s/o Pabung and Angom John (24) s/o late Pakchao, all belonging to Phayeng Ching Khunou.

Most of the suspects have been examined but the motive and identity of the killers cannot be ascertained till date, conceded the OC.

Quoting doctors who performed post mortem examination on the corpses of Chanbi and Meneka, the OC said that the latter was raped before murder.

Police believed that they can find some leads to the double murder case from Angom Ibohal, the eldest son of late Chanbi who left home some years back.

At first, Angom Ibohal (18) joined an armed group.

He deserted the group along with ten other comrades taking weapons along with them.

Out of the 11 deserters, seven of them were gunned down in Tengnoupal area.

The remaining four joined another armed group.

There are reports that they have fled away from the second group again, said the OC.

Ibohal is among the four deserters but it cannot be confirmed which group they are currently with.

However, Ibohal has been in contact with his uncles and aunts.

If Ibohal can be produced, some clues about the murder of the mother-daughter duo can be established, the police officer added.
