Imphal, Jul 16:
"Muslim women taking to drug peddling behind the purdah is not an encouraging development" said general secretary of the All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA) Tajuddin Yumkhaibam.
Speaking in a seminar organised by AMADA on drug abuse at Shambrukhong UJB School today, Tajuddin noted that the recent spurt in the number of Muslim women taking to drug peddling while staying at their homes is a matter of grave concern.
He observed that it's time for all the responsible citizens to devise a way to wean them away from such a disastrous habit.
Reminding that women are naturally responsible for the well being of their children and proper upbringing of the youth, he lamented that women taking up such disastrous profession of drug peddling is a misfortune for the entire State.
Remarking that Lilong inhabited by minority Muslims has become synonymous with drugs, Tajuddin called upon all the people of Lilong to erase such an ignominious image of their place.
Today's seminar was also attended by PHED AE Abdul Summad and AMADA president L Tomba as chief guest and president respectively.
A number of resolutions were adopted during the meeting including a united struggle against drug abuse irrespective of age or community, establishment of an AMADA unit at Noori Bazar, fixing responsibilities of all untoward incidents on the individuals defying the resolutions of AMADA etc.
As a part of the function, 30 strips of SP tablets were also consigned to flames.
These tablets were surrendered to AMADA at its office yesterday by two drug peddlers.
AMADA has been launching a drive against sale and consumption of drugs for the past many months.
