Imphal, Aug 14:
Recalling the incidents of mass uprising against the oppression and gross violation of human rights by security forces in the aftermath of the murder of Thangjam Manorama on July 10, 2004 by 17 AR and the subsequent establishment of the Apunba Lup, the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup is observing 'Day Against Colonial Oppression' on August 16 at MDU hall.
A statement issued by the Lup noted that since the day Manipur was merged with the Indian Union in 1949, the erstwhile sovereign Manipuri Nation was kept under the virtual military rule characterised by rampant killings and gross violation of human rights.
Under the infamous Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958, many innocent civilians of the State have been victimised by security forces besides raping and murdering a large number of Manipuri women including Ngaprum Rose and Th Manorama, to cite a few example, said the statement.
It further appealed to all the civil societies, social organisations, student bodies and all the individuals to attend the observation.
