Imphal, June 14:
A two-day open discussion on the theme 'The desire direction that education the system in Manipur should lead' has begun from today at the conference hall of State Guest House here.
The open discussion is being organised by Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM).
Pro-Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof H Nandakumar Sharma and vice president of DESAM PC Newton attended the inaugural function of the open discussion as chief guest and president respectively.
All Manipur College Teachers' Association (AMCTA) president P Laingam, Manipur University Teachers' Association (MUTA) president Dr M Ranjit, All Manipur Government Higher Secondary Lecturers Welfare Association general secretary M Joykumar and All Manipur Government Recognised Private School Welfare Association president Th Shyam Khaba were also present at the occasion as guests of honour.
Giving the key note address of the function attended by representatives of various social organisations, DESAM secretary general LC Santosh observed that development of education is the only means through which a society can progress.
However, the present education system in Manipur is really deplorable.
The existing political conflict in the State has also given a serious impact not only on its socio-politico-economic condition but also on the education system.
So it is high time for all the people to come together and discuss ways and means of improving the education system, he said.
In his address as chief guest of the function, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof H Nandakumar said some years back the standard of education in Manipur had deteriorated so much so that there was serious apprehension of its complete breakdown.
But with the collective efforts of various social organisations, the education system has steadily improved over the past few years.
The prevalence of mass copying among the students during the matriculation examination has come down significantly today, he said.
