Imphal, Aug 01: With not less than 2000 people becoming HIV positive in Manipur every year and five out of every 100 HIV positive cases being children, the problem of HIV/AIDS is really grave, stated Deputy Director of Manipur State AIDS Control Society Dr Promodkumar.

Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of the two-day sensitisation programme on HIV/AIDS for artistes and people associated with traditional art form has begun from today at Public Theatre Hall, Phoijing, Nambol today, Dr Promodkumar noted that although HIV/AIDS was earlier considered to be a disease of the people living in urban areas only, now people living in remote border areas who have not even heard about the name of the HIV/AIDS are becoming prey to the dreaded virus.

The problem of HIV/AIDS in Manipur is really grave, with not less than 2000 people becoming HIV positive every year and children accounting five percent of the cases out of every 100 HIV positive people, he said.

In such a scenario, Dr Promokumar said every body should try to prevent themselves from getting infected/affected by the dreaded virus and all those who have been already been infected/affected should take up the responsibility of preventing the virus from spreading to another person.

In his address as chief guest of the function, noted Shumang Leela playwright Chana Lukhoi said people directly associated with promotion of traditional art should take the responsibility of spreading awareness on HIV/AIDS among the people living in far flung areas.

The Maibas and the Maibis who are closely linked with the socio-cultural live of the people, should not only made themselves be aware of the problem of HIV/AIDS in Manipur, but they should contribute thei mite in the ongoing combat by sensitisising their subordinates and the people on the issue, he said.

Ch Iboton presided over the inaugural function of the programme being organised jointly by Manipur AIDS Control Society and All Manipur Nupi Marup, Lamlai Area.

The training programme is being participated by many Maibas, Maibis, Nat and Sanskirtan singers and other persons associated with traditional art forms of Manipur.

The training programme would continue till tomorrow.
