Imphal, Jun 01:
Raising serious concern over the increased crime against women and the cosmopolitan nature of the border town of Moreh, different social organisations and women societies of Moreh have urged for a Women Cell in Moreh police station.
A memorandum submitted to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Moreh observed that in case of a crime against women, fear and reluctance constrain them to seek justice from the law enforcing agencies on account of the absence of Women Cell in police stations.
Coupled with the dismal female literacy rate in Chandel district, most often women victims lack the courage to come forward against crime perpetrated by the opposite gender.
Absence of women cell acts as strong deterrent to confide the details of the crimes committed against them, it said.
As such many crimes against women remain unreported and unexposed and culprits go unpunished thereby encouraging of recurrence of the crimes, added the memorandum.
Further, the joint memorandum of Border Area Development Centre (Moreh), Sunrise Youth Club and other social organisations urged for setting up of a Women Cell in Moreh police station at the earliest.
