Imphal, April 17:
The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) observed its 25 anniversary of "Mikap Thokpa" in a simple function at Manipur College today.
Former AMSU president L Gojendro, AMSU president Umesh and All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj's president Taruni attended the function as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the function, L Gojendro said that AMSU had been playing a very crucial role in all the important issues during the last forty years and has never shied away from any of the major problems that had confronted the State or the people.
He further said that Mikap Thokpa is being observed annually in memory of the two students who were killed during the agitation for eviction of non Manipuris from the State.
Elaborating on the true meaning of the word Mikap Thokpa, he said that the word does not only mean being alert to the problems around us but also to conduct self introspections from time to time.
Commenting on the ongoing agitation of Meetei Mayek activists for implementation of Meetei Mayek in the State, he said that agitation will only come to a meaningful conclusion when the mass put its weight behind it and further urged the people to come forward and join the agitation.
In his presidential speech, Umesh said that it has become very necessary to monitor the works of all the major student bodies as most the bodies are unnecessarily indulging in issues which are not in any way related to the student community but hastened to add that the Govt should first of all be very alert and take up its responsibilities sincerely if it wants the student bodies to stay away from issues which are not relevant to the Student community.
Well wishers and relatives of the two students of the two departed souls paid floral tributes at the tombs of Potshangbam Premanada and Huidrom Lokendro located at Pishum Chinga Mathak.
