The people of Manipur should be made aware of the advantages of Domestic Violence Cell by deploying different service providers in different parts of the State, suggested Department of Social Welfare Women Development Officer Surender A Shishak.
Surender further stated that good infrastructure is required to make the cell effective while speaking during a seminar on 'Domestic Violence' against Women and Children held at Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal on Saturday.
The seminar was organized by the Environment and Economics Management Association (EEMA).
Domestic Violence Act 2005 was implemented in Manipur in November, 2007, where in 300 cases have been registered, out of which 90 cases have been successful, disclosed Gandhapyari, Secretary of EEMA.
One victim from Sagolband named, L Chentamani, revealed that she was being harassed and tortured by her in-laws after marriage.
Her husband passed away as he was a drug addict and an alcoholic.
Later, she was physically assaulted by her in-laws.
She therefore expressed her gratitude to EEMA for their assistance extended to her in times of need and then said, "Domestic Violence Act has enabled me to settle and stay in my husband's house and saved my life".
Chief guest of the seminar, Ch Jamini, chairperson of Manipur State Commission For Women (MSCW) stated that they would build a hostel in the MSCW complex for the women who face such domestic violences and also said that the domestic Violence Act would be reviewed by next month.
It has been one and half years since the MSCW came into existence and the statistics of domestic violence in Manipur is in a high position, said Ch Jamini.
She also said MSCW has undertaken different awareness programmes to make the women know the rights given by the constitution of India.
The recent incident happened in the Sugnu area where in a nine years old girl was raped by a 50 years old man, was very unfortunate, lamented the Chairperson of MCSW and also further said that the Act would enable the accused to be punished so as to ensure the safety of women.
The seminar was graced by Jamini, chairperson, Manipur State Commission for Women, (MSCW), RK Bidita, Manipur State Social Welfare Board, (MSSWB), Lingjanin Gangte, member of MSCW, Laljan Begum, member MSCW, S Saratkumar Sharma, Joint Director of Women and Child Development, Social Welfare Department and Surender Shisak, also from the Social Welfare Development, Government of Manipur.
