The body of Sungnem Premson Lamkang who was killed during the encounter between the personnel of 21 Assam Rifles and activists of NSCN (I-M) at Leingangching under Waikhong Police Station on July 26 has been taken by his family members following an understanding arrived with the Government today.
The body was handed over to the bereaved family members after a post-mortem at RIMS morgue today.
The understanding was arrived at during a joint meeting attended by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Minister DK Korung-thang, Thoubal SP and leaders of LNNC, LKK, CNPO and NSUC from the side of the victim at the Chief Minister's bungalow this afternoon.
After deliberating on the issue, both the parties agreed that the matter would be brought up during the meeting of the combined headquarters to ensure such incident do not recur and to pay an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 lakh to the bereaved family members by tomorrow through the DC concerned.
Body for disposal: The body of Lairenlakpam Sunil of Phaknung Khongshang which was found shot dead by unidentified persons near the gate of N Birahari College at Khundrakapam under Heingang PS on July 26 night would be handed over to the Imphal Municipality for disposal if no one comes to claim it by tomorrow.
The post-mortem of the body was conducted at RIMS today.
According to police source, the body had been identified as that of Sunil by his one of his uncles identified as L Ibopishak.
Meanwhile, the JAC formed in connection with the killing had announced that a bandh would be called along the Imphal-Ukhrul Road if the killers do not come out with the explanation on why Sunil was killed.
Bodies still lying at RIMS: The bodies of Paominlun Touthang of Aigejeng village and Lhunlal Haokip of Leisan Village who were shot dead by police commandos at Langol Laimanai under Lamphel Police Station on July 26 are still lying at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital with respective families refusing to take back the bodies.
Claiming them to be innocent, president of Kuki Students' Organisation, Imphal Branch Z Haokip, chief of Aigejang Paojalet Touthang and chief of Thombol village Letkhojang Touthang yesterday jointly submitted a representation to the Chief Minister demanding instituting an inquiry into the incident and terminate the service of those guilty police commandos.
Endorsing the demands, KSO General Headquarters has also announced of launching a intense agitation in case of the failure of the Government to fulfil these demands by noon tomorrow.
