As in other parts of the globe, World Alzheimer's Day, 2007 was observed in the State today with the main objective of spreading awareness about the disease and the need to take care of the aged persons suffering from it.
Alzheimer's is a progressive form of presenile dementia that is similar to senile dementia except that it usually starts in the 40s or 50s.The first symptoms are impaired memory which is followed by impaired thought and speech and finally complete helplessness.
At the mini-auditorium of RIMS, the World Alzheimer's Day was observed along with a scientific session under the joint aegis of Medical Society, RIMS and Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur State Branch.
The inaugural function of the observance was attended by Director of RIMS Prof L Fimate as chief guest, president of Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur Branch Dr L Surchandra as guest of honour and Dean of Academic, RIMS Prof W Gyaneshore as functional president.
In his address as chief guest, Prof Fimate pointed out that out of every five aged persons in the world, one suffers from Alzheimer .
So there is the need for wide spread awareness and understand the nature of this common disease of the aged people, he said, while explaining that emotional disturbance, confusion and lack of power of memory retention among the aged people are some of the common symptoms of Alzheimer's.Aged persons suffering from this disease should be looked after with respect and given necessary treatment in time so that they can continue to lead a dignified life, Prof Fimate said.
In the scientific session was held with Prof Y Iboton and Prof N Heramani taking the chair.
Presenting a paper on 'Neurological aspect of Alzheimer's disease' during the session, Assistant Professor of Medicine, RIMS Dr Suraj observed 5 percent of the people below 65 years of age in the world are suffering from Alzheimer while 20 percent among people of 85 years of age.
But it can be cure if detected earlier and given necessary treatment in time.
Dr K Shantibala, Psychiatric Consultant of JN Hospital and Associate Professor RK Lenin of Psychiatric Department, RIMS also read out papers on the topic of 'Psychiatric impact of Alzheimer's disease' and 'Role of Family in management of Alzheimer's patient' respectively as resource persons of the scientific session.
