Attended by People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLHA) coming from Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Manipur, the 24th International AIDS Candle Light Memorial Day observance began from today at Imphal Hotel here.
It is the third time that such joint event of the PLHAs in NE region is being hosted with the main objective of promoting Positive Activism among them.
The third Sunday of May every year since 1983 is being observed the world over as International AIDS Candle Light Memorial Day in remembrance of all those who have lost their lives in the HIV/AIDS epidemic and candles would be lit to mark the occasion.
The event at Imphal which would continue till May 22 is being organised jointly by Constella Futures, SASO, Life Line Foundation, Kripa Society, Care Foundation, MNP+ and Manipur State AIDS Control Society.
Apart from five PLHA representatives each from Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya and two from Sikkim, two MNP + members from each of the nine districts of Manipur would come together to discuss various issues related to problems faced by the PHLA community.
Meanwhile, the observation committee has appealed to people of Manipur to light up a candle on May 20 evening.
The Observation Committee comprises of Women Positive Alliance (WPA), Hands for Peaceful Society (HAPES), Lainingthou Foundation, Debjani Leima Foundation, Counselling and Social Improvement Organisation (CASIO), Moirangkhom Bokulmakhong Oriental Welfare Organisation and People of Positive (POP+).
