In remembrance of Pebam Chittaranjan, who was christened a human torch when he self immolated on August 15, 2004 in protest against the prolonged imposition of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, a public function was organised at MDU Hall here today.
All those who spoke at the occasion gave a clarion call for unity among the people for the success of any movement.
Organised under the name of 'Loilam Leingakki Mee-Ot Meeneigee Mayokta Naharolsingna Temsingnakhiba N limit', the function was organised by Working Committee of the Apunba Lup with its members Sapamcha Kangleipal, L Romesh, E Johnson and M Sarat as presidium members.
Speaking at the occasion, Kangleipal decried that excesses being committed by the security forces on the innocent people in the name of counter insurgency operation with immunity granted under Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
Even school going children are not spared, he pointed out.
Although the security forces dubbed the militants operating in Manipur as terrorists, Army officers, who are well-educated and have thorough knowledge of human rights are violating the rights of the people of Manipur, Kangleipal contended.
Johnson said inspite of numerous cases of human rights violation, State Govt has not been able to punish the guilty security personnel Or fix responsibility.
So there is to need on the part of the suffering people to unite and launch joint movement to save their lives, he exhorted.
Sarat noted it is high time for the people of Manipur to ponder why they have not been able to achieve their goal despite having launched various movements against prolonged imposition of AFSPA and the excesses of the security forces.
For their own welfare, the people of Manipur should themselves strive hard without depending on others, he added.
Romesh said now the time has arrived for the people, specially the youths to question and discuss among themselves whether they would be 'able follow the footsteps of Chittaranjan who sacrificed his life for a cause dear to all of us.
Among the invitees who spoke at the function, ACOAM-Lup president Langjangei Kamei said when it comes to fighting against AFSPA, Chittaranjan and Sharmila are the only two real pioneers.
He also expressed serious concern over, differences of opinion among the civil organisations whenever a mass movement is launched before achieving the goal.
Another invitee, ex-president of MUSU P Ashokumar observed that the people of Manipur have been compelled to think over whether AFSPA has been imposed with the main purpose of wiping out the whole community.
