Gold Via Walk Over ! A First ? Dad, State wait for Golden Suranjoy to celebrate

Imphal, October 13 2010: Suranjoy won the gold without even landing a punch on his rival in the final of the Common Wealth Games today as his rival failed to turn up, and even as the Nation erupted in joy after he was declared the winner of the 52 kg class boxing competition of the 19th Commonwealth Games, the Mayengbam family will hold back the celebration till his return home.

Speaking to The Sangai Express moments after the glorious news was flashed through the media, Suranjoy's father M Inakhunba said the family will certainly celebrate with a sumptuous feast after the youngest among seven siblings arrives at the Uchiwa Awang leikai residence of the Mayengbam family.

Suranjoy, whose boxing talent was unarguably shaped to an international level pugilist during his stint as a SAI inmate in between 2000 and 2005, is currently an Indian Navy.

It is also beyond doubt that Suranjoy's fighting instinct runs deep in the family as not only was his father a Mukna Kangjei (indigenous sport) player but his elder brother, currently an Assam Rifles personnel, was also an international level boxer.

Suranjoy, who passed matriculate examination from Uchiwa High School, was supposed to slug out against a Kenya boxer in the commonwealth Games final, but the opponent pulled out at the last minute citing injury.

Significantly, the Kenyan suffered defeat at the hands of Suranjoy when the two faced off at the last Commonwealth Boxing Championship final.

Inakhunba asserted that he had full confidence in his ward coming out with flying colours.

Confiding that neither had Suranjoy contacted the family before or after the final bout, the father said he along with many locals were awaiting for the gold medal showdown in front of the television set connected with a DTH purchased by Suranjoy before departing for the Commonwealth Games.

The show down, however failed to materialise with the opponent giving a walk over to Suranjoy.

No one is complaining though PTI reports from Delhi : India clinched two gold medals in boxing on Wednesday as Suranjoy Singh (52kg) has got walkover from injured Kenyan Benson Njangiru and Manoj Kumar (64 kg) out-punched England's Bradley Saunders 11-2 in the finals.

The Indian duo of Sharath Kamal and Subhajit Saha came from behind to win the 33rd gold medal against Singapore's pair of Gao and Yang in the men's doubles table tennis event on Wednesday.
