Shillong, July 13: The social profiling by the Delhi police of the students from the North East studying in New Delhi has irked the North East Students' Organization (NESO).

A few days after the report that the North Eastern states students in New Delhi have been asked to abide by a booklet entitled Security Tips for Northeast Students/Visitors In Delhi, the President of the Khasi Student's Union (KSU) as well as the frontline member of the North East Students Organization (NESO) Samuel Jyrwa said today, that such restraints has forced us to mull over the idea of calling a meeting of NESO in the days to come to discuss the issue.

Calling the booklet as a diktat that proves New Delhi's indifferences to the North East lifestyle, Jyrwa said, the NESO would meet soon to discuss this racial issue before meeting our representatives to take up the issue social outlining of NE students.

"We will definitely protest," stated Jyrwa.

Referring to the booklet which is reported to have asked the NE students to "avoid wearing revealing dresses, avoid lonely road/bylane when dressed scantily and even spoke about the food habits," the Meghalaya Minister of Higher and Technical education RG Lyngdoh in his reaction today said "though the intention is not malicious , yet the points of those guidelines are not the right approach.

"Instead of helping our (North East) students to amalgamate in a harmonious way with the those in Delhi, the booklet has moved in a negative way", stated Lyngdoh, adding, " It is unfortunate that this mindset has not changed in New Delhi right from the time we were there".

Incidentally, Lyngdoh was also a student in Delhi University and a witness to the alleged discriminating mindset.

"It could have been scripted cautiously" stated Lyngdoh in his reference to the guidelines prepared by an IPS Robin Hibu, Deputy Commissioner (West Delhi), who hails from the North East.
