Moreh, April 07: Stepping up the vigil against bird flu, employees of the Veterinary Department today seized a number of chickens and eggs brought in from Myanmar at Moreh today and advised the shop keepers against buying and selling the birds and eggs brought in from across the border.

About 300 eggs brought in from Myanmar and sold to traders at Moreh were seized during a drive today morning.

Moreh police personnel also seized about 10 birds brought in from Myanmar.

The seized birds were then handed over to the custody of the Veterinary Department at Moreh.

Taking and handing over documents were signed when the birds and eggs were seized.

All the traders were thoroughly advised on the threat posed by the birds and eggs from Myanmar.

Recently positive cases of bird flu were detected at Mandalay.

Speaking to newsmen, Deputy Director of the Veterinary Department of Moreh, Dr S Thoiba said that officials and employees of the Veterinary Department alone cannot check the sale of birds and eggs brought in from Myanmar.

The co-operation of police and the NGOs of Moreh is highly needed to check the sale of such birds and eggs, he added.

It is easy to stop traders from bringing in birds, animals and eggs from Myanmar at gate number 2 but the problems lies with the porous border, from which traders from the across the border can sneak in with their commodities, said the Deputy Director.

To check the goods being brought in through the border, the Deputy Director appealed to the common people and the NGOs to extend their help and co-operation.

Blood samples of the birds seized during the drive have been taken.
