Paving the way for reconstruction of Wangjing Bazar, a temporary market shed constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1.70 crores at Wangjing Lamding Bazar was inaugurated today.
The inaugural function of the temporary market shed was attended by MLA and PDA Chairman K Ranjit Singh as chief guest, MLA of Wangjing-Tentha A/C Dr M Nara Singh as president and chairperson of Wangjing-Lamjing Nagar Panchayat Sh Shanti Devi as guest of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Ranjit said the pace of development in Manipur has taken a back seat due to the prevailing unsettling law and order situation.
Calling of bandh, blockade, etc by every sundry organisations has dealt a serious impact on the economic activities of the people in Manipur, he pointed out.
He said that the State Govt has been taking up the tasks of reconstruction and renovation of various markets in tune with the need of the changing time with funding from the Central Govt.Construction works are currently underway at Moirang, Kumbi, Kwakta, Oinam, Kakching Khunou, Sugnu, Andro, Sikhong-Sekmai, Wangjing, Thoubal, Khwairamband Bazar, etc, he observed.
While noting that the temporary market shed has been constructed to facilitate reconstruction of the Wangjing Bazar, the PDA Chairman appealed to the people to bear with the inconveniences if any till a permanent market shed has been constructed.
There are also plan for constructing four toilet blocks, installing a 12,000 litre capacity water reservoir and erecting three gates at the temporary market shed, he informed.
Centre has already sanctioned an amount of Rs 11.57 crores for constructing a modern and permanent market at Wangjing Lamjing and National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) has been entrusted with the task of the implementing the work, the PDA chairman said, adding that NBCC has appointed the Guwahati-based M/s Trade and Technology Co.
for taking up the necessary very soon.
The permanent market shed is being targeted to be completed by August 17, 2007, he informed the gathering while appealing to all the women vendors to shift to the temporary market shed without any grudge.
Dr Nara, who presided over the function said demanded to know the reasons behind frequent firing attacks by unidentified gunmen at the residence of an honest public leader like him.
Is it the reward for my selfless service to the people, he questioned.
He further said Wangjing-Lamding market is going to become an important trading centre as the proposed Trans-Asian Highways would pass through the area.
There are in all 15 sheds and 77 shops in the temporary market which was inaugurated today.
