Imphal, February 17:
With the State Government looking the other way, the local people have taken up the onus of repairing and expanding the road stretch along Tiddim Line from Irengbam to Oinam.
Though the road comes under the jurisdiction of PWD, nothing had been taken up to improve the condition of the road in view of the ever increasing population and frequency of the movement of vehicular traffic along the said route.
The condition of the road had become so bad that travelling along it has been a real danger both for the commuters and transporters alike.
Taking serious note of the matter, Irengbam Development Committee took up the initiative of repairing and expanding the road with the support of the local people and succeeded in completing the task from January 15 to February 9, 2006.The Committee motivated the people to extend their support and went on a door to door campaign to collect donation for the purpose.
Land owners on either side of the road have also donated some portion of the land without any hesitation for the purpose of the expanding the road.
Taking cognisance of their generosity, the Committee wondered whether the State Government has any provisions for giving compensation to the land owners who have donated their land.
The Committee has also extended its gratitude to all those people who have donated money for the cause and mentioned LDA chairman and MLA of Nambol A/C N Loken Singh, his Departmental staff, MLA of Oinam A/C L Radhakishore Singh and Dr I Ibohal Singh of Irengbam in particular.
While making it clear to all that the Committee had not taken any assistance from the side of the Government in repairing the said road stretch, the Committee has appealed to all concerned not to issue any work order and sanctioned money on the sly in this connection.
