Imphal, April 17:
In an apparent reference to the statement of MEELAL issued yesterday, Ireibak daily, which has been boycotted by MEELAL on the Mayek issue, today said that it is not confused over the concept of freedom of the press.
In a statement the daily said that freedom of press means the liberty to choose what to publish, the liberty to comment on the truth and for the welfare of the people without any fear and to respect the different opinion and views of the different newspapers.
It has nothing to do with such and such Constitution or such and such Article, it added.
Ireibak has never decreed that people should read the paper for it believes in the freedom of choice (to allow people to decide what they want to read) and the right to information.
The decision to boycott or not to read Ireibak is based on the principle of freedom of choice, it said.
However dissuading distributors from carrying Ireibak and urging people not to read the paper is nothing but interfering in the freedom of choice and right to information of the public.
