Manipur joins VAT regime

Imphal, April 01: Inspite of the business community in Imphal area downing shutters today to protest implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) in Manipur the State Government promulgated the new tax system with immediate effect.

According to a Finance Department source consent of President APJ Abdul Kalam signaling implementation of VAT in Manipur had been received thereby joining other States in enforcing the tax system.

The State Finance Department is likely to issued an order tomorrow to officially declare implementation of VAT on technical ground of receipt of the Presidential nod even as certain infrastructural requirements to make the new tax system effective like computerization of taxation offices in all the districts and linking them with e-networking system are still as the nascent stage.

On the otherhand, the commercial hub of the capital district protested implementation of VAT with major trading houses imposing a bandh under the sponsorship of Associated Manipur Chamber of Commerce today.
