Imphal, June 27:
Issuing a clarion call to all to fight the rampant drug abuse amongst the people of Manipur, KYKL today said it awarded the death sentence on Ningthoujam Raja alias Inaithi (27) of Phoijing Makha Leikai at Nambol on June 24 as he was a drug peddler.
Similarly, the KYKL also punished a number of drug abusers with a bullet each on their legs.
They are Ph Kumar (28), Konjeng-bam Iboyaima (25) both of Moirang Thana Leikai (punished on June 25), Laishram Bomcha (25) of Nambol Awang, M Sanjoy, Laishram Binod both from Nambol bazar, and Saikhom Komol (26) of Kongkham Awang Leikai (punished on June 25).In a statement issued to the press today, KYKL said all the named persons were punished under the ONK of the outfit and added that the operation was carried out to coincide with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
To make Bishnupur a drug free district by December this year, its Special Task force, Southern Division and Western Division have been asked to keep a minute watch on all drug related activities, said the outfit and appealed to all concerned to make their venture successful.
All drug abusers and sellers have been warned to surrender to the outfit soon.
KYKL said that the Manipuri people have been at the receiving end of the Narco-Chemical warfare unleashed by India and to defeat this, no efforts should be spared.
Since 1987 the UN has been observing the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26 as drugs and its abuse had taken a heavy toll on the people of a number of countries especially in Latin America, South East Asia and Africa.
Today Manipur is reeling under the impact of drug abuse and HIV/AIDS said KYKL and quoted figures that said that out of 12,711 who tested positive for HIV, 6888 were drug addicts.
This shows that drug addicts ire the main carriers of the HIV virus and if this menace is not fought, then the future of Manipuri society is uncertain, said the outfit.
No people under the influence of drugs can come up and progress much less over throw the yoke of foreign rule, said KYKL and appealed to all the NGOs, clubs and organisations to take up a strict vigil against drug abuse.
