The drought like situation that prevailed in the State following the failure of monsoon has had a heavy impact on the farming/cultivation of crops in a number of villages in Moreh area of Chandel district.
Out of the many affected villages, the hardest hit are Ch Tengnoupal, T Bongmoul, Leisan, Tengnoupal, Chonjang, Jangoubung, T Maipi and New Mongjang village, general secretary of Moreh Block Chiefs� Association Ch Ngamthang Mate informed in a statement today.
He said that the people of the area, who entirely depend on jhuming cultivation with no other source of income to sustain their living, would have to face great hardships in the near future since the hope for a good harvest this year is remote.
This is a grave situation and a real worry for the people of the said areas, he noted.
More than 70 percent of the population are the victims of this natural calamity and the remaining population who were able to cultivate their field are also not having any respite with the problem of pests and rodent menace, he added.
