Suspected armed activists of the underground organisation, KYKL shot at an auto-rickshaw driver near the road diversion to Kairang from Sangakpham under Heingang Police Station at around 11.15 am today.
The injured auto-rickshaw driver who is undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital here is identified as Salam Leikham (52) of Langol Laimanai.
He drives his own auto-rickshaw.
According to reports, Leikham was waiting for passengers at the auto-parking near Shija Hospital at around 11 am today when an unidentified youth hired his auto for going to Chingmeirong Khongnang Karak.
From Khongnang Karak, he was taken to Sangakpham and from there again till the diversion point of Kairang road.
All this while, another unidentified youth followed them on a motor cycle.
After forcing the auto driver to kneel, the at the diversion point of Kairang Road, the two youths identified themselves as KYKL activists and one of them shot him on his right thigh.
They also allegedly threatened him with dire consequences if he does not shift from Laimanai village.
Leikham is said to be a member of the Naharol Progressive Horticulture Farmers' Association based at Laimanai.
It may be noted that on the night of April 21, five other members of the Association were hospitalised at RIMS after being assaulted by unidentified persons.
