Imphal, April 22:
A seminar cum public discussion programme on 'Migration of Manipuri Students, its causes and effects' would be held on May 6 and 7 at the premises of JN Manipur Dance Academy.
During the seminar to be jointly organised by Manipur University Students' Union, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur and Manipur Educational Development Research Association, features on the lives of students studying in other states of India would be presented.
The organisers also appealed to student leaders, parents, social organisations and student community to take part in the programme.
While briefing the media men at DESAM office today, MUSU president Kh Ashokkumar appreciated the contributions made by those educated outside the State.
He, however, lamented that in the last 5/6 years, students studying in several cities of India like Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad etc have started treating their stay in other cities more of a pleasure tour than for academic purposes claiming they indulge freely in immoral activities like drug abuse characterised by deterioration of personal manner.
He noted that such discouraging trend has attained a threatening magnitude which severely taints image of Manipur to the local populace.
The organisers also mentioned that during their inspection tour in the recent past, many youths of opposite sex were found living together like married couple do.
Manipuri girls accounted for lion's share of birth control pills bought from pharmacies located near places where they stay put, informed the inspection team.
Moreover it was also discovered that a high percentage of Manipuri girls staying in such cities undergo abortions.
On the other hand, numerous boys have fallen victims of drug abuse.
The MUSU president also mentioned that many girl students were found freely frolicking around with local men besides using drugs.
