Imphal, Jun 17:
Theft of power line has been cited as the chief factor responsible for power shortage/failure in Tamenglong district headquarters inspite of State authorities' assurances for regular power during the World Cup in Germany.
According to informed source, outcries of Tamenglong district public due to power snap since the opening day of the football fiesta despite the pledge for adequate electricity on match days in all the district headquarters, had been narrowed down to cutting and disappearance of power lines in Oinamlong area.
Apart from the police registering a case on the theft, Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur has asked village authority chairman of Oinamlong to produce the culprit (thief) within five days' time.
activists of the student body along with members of Zeliangrong Youth organisation swinging into action on being informed about the theft probed at Oinamlong areas on June 15 and subsequently recovered the wires but the culprit could not be apprehended.
Nevertheless, the village chairman has been intimated to hand over person/s involved in the power line theft, contended ZSUM education secretary GH Newme.
Even though power supply to the district headquarters was restored on June 15 itself with power department personnel, in the backdrop of threats from student bodies to sabotage Tamenglong power substation, stringing new lines, other areas of the district including Nungba, Rengpang and Khongshang are said to be still reeling under acute power shortage.
