As in other parts of the country, 60th Independence Day of India was observed by the State Government and other agencies in different parts of the State yesterday.
The main function of the Government was held at the parade ground of Ist Manipur Rifles with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh hoisting the tri-colour and CO of 2 IRB K Radhashyam Singh commanding an impressive march past of 31 different contingents and 6 band parties.
Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Ministers, MLAs, top officials of Civil, Police and Para-military and common people participated in the function.
Apart from his address to the people, the Chief Minister also presented President's Police Medal for Gallantry (5), Bar to Police Medal for Gallantry (1), Police Medal for Gallantry (9) and Police Medal for Meritorious Services (2) to the recipients whose names have been announced on the occasion of Independence Day 2005 and Republic Day, 2006.Recipients of President's Police Medal for Gallantry are SP of Imphal West Clay Khongsai, IPS; Sub-Inspector of Police, Imphal West Konthoujam Bobby; Constable of Bishnupur District Police Laishram Dinesh Singh; Constable of Bishnupur district police Salam Naobi Singh and Constable of Imphal West District Police Laishram Sanatomba Singh.
Head Constable of Imphal East District Police Khundrakpam Ranjit Singh was presented with the Bar to Police Medal for Gallantry.
The recipients of Police Medal for Gallantry are Additional SP of Imphal East Thokchom Radheshyam Singh, MPS; Jamadar of 2 IRB Irengbam Khaba Singh; Constable of Imphal West Soibam Rohitkanta Meetei; Sub-Inspector of Police, Imphal East Yumnam Okendro Meetei; Constable of Imphal East district N Ginzalian; Constable of Imphal East Ashem Modhu Singh; Constable of Imphal East Thongam Suresh Singh, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Thoubal District Ningombam Tikendra Meetei and Constable of Thoubal District Md Hussain.
Co of 2nd IRB Koijam Radhashyam Singh and Sub-Inspector of Police, Imphal West District Wangkheimayum Ashok-kumar were also felicitated with Police Medal for Meritorious Service at the occasion.
Moreover, on the occasion of Independence Day, the President of India had awarded Presidents' Police Medal for Gallantry to Sub-Inspector of Police of Imphal East P Achouba Meetei; Havildar of 3 IRB H Premananda Singh; Police Constable of Imphal East T Sadananda Singh, Police Constable of Imphal West H Premjit Singh, Rifleman of 3 IRB Md Habibur Rahman and Rifleman of Ist Bn MR Md Yahiya Khan.
While the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service was presented to DGP Yumnam Joykumar, the President of India also presented Police Medal for Meritorious Services to SP, CID (Special Branch), Potsangbam Dhanakumar Singh and Inspector of Police , Imphal East District Thokchom Krishnatombi Singh.
In connection with the Independence day, the State Government had also cut down 20 days of the jail term of six convicts serving in Central Jail, Imphal and Sajiwa Jail as well as life sentence of another prisoner by 45 days.
The Independence Day was observed reportedly observed in other parts of the State like Chandel, Tamenglong, Ukhrul, Senapati, Churchandpur, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts as well as in Saitu-Gamphajol.
The Independence Day was also observed at GC Imphal, CRPF campus with due respect and proper ceremony.
Additional DIGP GC-Imphal Anil Duggal, who is also the senior most officer present in the station, hoisted the National flag.
Speaking after hoisting the flag, he highlighted the struggle that was undertaken to gain independence and briefly \touched upon the efforts put up by the force in upholding the independence, unity and integrity of the Nation.
He also exhorted all the personnel to fully dedicate to the CRPF motto of 'Service and loyalty' toward the country and the society.
The names of Distinguish/ Meritorious and Gallantry awardees were also read out at the occasion.
To mark the occasion, the customary 'At home' was organised in the station where sub-ordinate officers invited the Gazetted Officers to their mess.
Bara khana was served in the evening.
A platoon of 124 Bn, CRPF also led the Independence Day contingent in an impressive parade at Ist Bn Manipur Rifles parade ground where Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh hoisted the National flag.
