Sadar hills shadow on Ukhrul district, cops clear road block

Imphal, August 10 2011:
Police today dispersed a large group of mostly women agitators at Gwaltabi area of Ukhrul district who were enforcing the ongoing general strike called by Sadar Hills districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) .
About 100 women armed with sticks and other objects were spotted blocking the Imphal-Ukhrul road in Gwaltabi area at around 10 am in support of the ongoing SHDDC agitation call.
atleast six of the agitators sustained injuries when police teams of Imphal East district and Litan police station launched the crackdown by bursting tear-gas canisters.
While most suffered minor injuries in the police action one of them has been brought to Imphal for treatment as the injury is stated to be serious.
A potato loaded truck coming to Imphal from Jessami side via Ukhrul was set on fire by suspected agitation supporters last night near Gwaltabi.
It is informed that to avert violent incidents in the area, police teams of Litan and Lamlai police stations have been deployed since about 5 pm.

On the otherhand, a police source said about 30 loaded trucks on their way to the State capital from Jessami-ukhrul road have crossed Litan area at around 7 am today with about a same number inching towards Ukhrul district headquarters from the Manipur-Nagaland border from 6 pm.
Another group of oil tankers with CRPF escort party is likely to reach Jessami after dusk.
It is also said that about 313 trucks escorted by security forces left for Jiribam this morning with latest inputs confirming that the vehicles have crossed Kotlien in the afternoon after a brief halt at Seijang village area due to landslide.
In another development to the ongoing SHDDC agitation, people from about 16 villages of Kangchup area along with students staged sit-in-protest in support of the demand for upgrading Sadar Hills to a full-fledged revenue district.
The sit-in-demonstra- tion was jointly organised by Kangchup area units of Kuki Students' Organisation, Chiefs' Association, KIM and Kangchup Area Women's Human Rights Union.
They also raised slogans in support of the SHDDC demand.
