Imphal, Aug 07:
The 48 hour general strike called by the All Manipur Government Aided College Teachers' Association (AMGACTA) from midnight of August 10 till the midnight of August 12 has been called off.
A statement issued by AMGACTA informed that the decision to this effect was taken in accordance with the instruction of KYKL and in view of the hardships likely to be endured by the public due to the bandh.
However, it took strong exception to the attitude of the State Govt which fails to take notice and address the demands and plight of people until bandhs and strikes are resorted to.
Reminding that the agitation of aided college teachers was launched during the summer vacation, it noted that consequent upon the failure of the State Government to heed the demands of AMGACTA, the agitation is extended till today.
Admitting that the number of students in the seven aided colleges is a big one when compared to the number of students in the 27 Government colleges, the statement alleged that many of the Government Colleges combine their students during examinations for BA/BSc courses as these colleges have very few students of their own.
Maintaining that these seven aided colleges are producing a good number of successful students every year, it contended that the movement of AMGACTA is not exclusively for the 506 teachers as these successful students are also assets of the Nation.
While asserting that all the aided college teachers were appointed with the full knowledge of the State Government, it clarified that AMGACTA does not demand approval of all the aided teachers at one go rather it is demanding approval of the teachers in a phase wise manner.
