After MEELAL had issued strong warnings against the ongoing process for primary teacher recruitment, two unidentified women today lobbed a polythene bag containing petrol in an arson attempt at the Lamphel police station where issuance and receipt of application forms for teacher recruitment was being done.
The incident took place at around 1:15 pm.
One of the women was clad in phanek while the other wore jeans.
They used a gas lighter to lit the petrol container before lobbing it in haste.
The northern wall of the police station was somewhat damaged because of the subsequent fire, however, luckily no one was hurt in the arson attempt.
But in the ensuing commotion and due to exposure to the sudden heat wave, two women were injured.
They were immediately rushed to RIMS.
The two injured women are identified as Sarangthem Shantibala (36) of Malom Bazar and Nameirakpam Pratima (30) of Ningomthong Pebiya Pandit Leikai.
After the fire was doused, applications were issued till 2 pm.
The two accused women also stood among the queue among the prospective candidates holding the inflammable substance in a polythene bag.
And the one wearing jeans break away from the queue first shouting 'fire' just as the fire sparked off.
Mention may be here that MEELAL volunteers had attempted another arson at MB College when issuance of forms for school teacher recruitment was underway on November 2.Following the threat, venues for issuance of forms were shifted to Lamphel police station for Imphal West and at Porompat police station for Imphal East and at district police head quarters for other districts.
