Minor's death set to kick up a storm

Imphal, September 30 2012: Even though the suspects have been rounded, the JAC formed in connection with the myterious case of a girl of 11, who was found hung to death on September 13 inside the kitchen, is set to roll out a series of intense agitation to demand appropriate punishment of the guilty.

Laishram Sumitra Devi aged 11 of Top Makha Leikai of Porompat police station was found hung to death inside the kitchen on September 13 under suspicious circumstances.

The two suspects who have been rounded are the uncle of the late little girl, Laishram Rajen (42) and his wife Laishram Dhani (40) .

They were pulled up by the police on September 28 and after being produced before a Court today, have been remanded to custody.

According to the father of the late girl, Laishram Biren, since sale was good on account of the Panchayat election on September 13, he was at his shop at Top Iril Mapan, which is located just 150 metre from his house.

At about 1.30 pm, he left his wife, Bijaya and an 8 year old son Dhananjoy to look after the shop and went back home to take a bath.

At that point of time, Sumitra was playing at a side of the court yard while a feast was going on at the house of his younger brother Rajen, next door.

Sumitra tried to follow him to the shop, after he had finished his bath and taken his meal, said Biren and added that he turned her back to look after the house as there was no one at home.

Once he reached the shop, he gave some eatables to his younger son and told him to go back home and share them with Sumitra, recalled Biren.

"After about 5 minutes I heard some commotion coming from the direction of my house and I rushed back home.

When I reached home, I saw my brother along with some others cradling the body of Sumitra and was told that they found Sumitra hanging in the kitchen with a cloth," said Biren.

Biren said that he wanted to inform the police and get a post mortem to conducted, but was discouraged by Rajen and an elder brother.

They said that it would take Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 for the post mortem and asked whether I could afford it, recalled Biren.

Thereafter Rajen and the elder brother took his signature to the effect that no complaint would be lodged with the police and no post mortem would be conducted, alleged Biren.

As such the last rites of Sumitra were conducted the same day itself.

However based on the inputs from the neighbours, who heard the last few words of Sumitra, Biren said that he lodged a complaint with the police naming Rajen and his wife as the suspects, he added.

The JAC formed in connection with the death Sumitra has meanwhile announced that they would launch a series of intense agitation if the guilty are not awarded befitting punishment.
