A semblance of peace and tranquillity descended at Churachandpur today after the DC convened an all community meeting at his residence to defuse the simmering the tension that has been brewing there ever since the assassination of IPG Thangthuam and his escort commander by the proscribed PLA at Oinam bazar on December 31.The meeting also condemned the unruly incident yesterday.
The agreement was reached today during a meeting convened by the DC AK Sinha and attended by newly transferred SP Larjee Dorji, leaders of Meitei Youth Organisation, CMLYC, Meitei Society, Churachandpur District Students' Union, Kuki Students' Organisation, Zomi Students' Federation, Paite Tribe Council, Hmar Inpui, Kuki Inpi, Indigenous Tribes Council and Meira Paibis.
The meeting was held from 3.30 pm till 6.30 pm.
Former Minister Hangkhanpao was also present at the meeting which was attended by representatives of 29 communities.
Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, the DC said that the representatives of different communities today strongly condemned the unruly incident yesterday which threatened to disturb peace in the district.
The community leaders also pledged to do their best to ensure peace amongst the different communities living in the district and to ensure that such ugly incident does not recur.
Sporadic violence were reported yesterday at Churachandpur town with some houses stoned.
Stress was laid on maintaining close ties between the different communities in the district.
Calling for peace and understanding, the DC told the meeting that any issue concerning the people of the district should be resolved by themselves and not by outsiders.
To a question, the DC replied that to avert any possible further problems, adequate security personnel will be deployed at sensitive zones and added that restrictions under CrPC 144 is still in force at the district.
The SP of the district informed media persons that though a general understanding has been reached between the people to maintain peace, IRB, Commandos, CRPF and BSF will continue to be deployed at the town.
The security deployment will be concentrated at places which re home to a number of different communities, he added.
On yesterday's incident, the SP said that after the meeting at Lamka ground yesterday, some anti ssocial elements under the influence of intoxicants ignited trouble.
