Imphal, September 10:
MUSU president Kh Ashokumar who is currently in the custody of the RPF was produced before local TV channel ISTV and made to recount the incidents that led to the present impasse.
Appearing before the camera, Ashokumar recounted that a cadre of the RPF came to the office of MUSU on September 6 to discuss the organisation of a programme on September 24/25 at MU.
Ashokumar said that since there was a decree by the KYKL that no function should be organised by MUSU in connection with the raising day of any underground organisation, he had replied MUSU cannot organise the function.
To this the RPF cadre took out a gun and questioned whether MUSU is only for the KYKL and does not represent the student community or the people, said the MUSU leader.
DESAM president Romesh, MSAD president Rojesh, MUSU Councillors, ex-Councillors were present at the room and one of them said, Pointing a gun at our president in front of us is unbecoming.
Thereafter the gun was seized and the gunman was beaten up, said Ashokumar.
However the president himself and another student named Shyam stopped the beating, said the MUSU chief.
The president himself and the others present said that since they have been projected by their organisation, they did not want to go against the decree of their organisation and they also made it clear that they are not afraid of any confrontation.
The MUSU chief also said they contacted the elders of KYKL and urged them to finalise the issue at their level as the matter could get out of hand.
The KYKL elders advised them to talk things over but expressed regret over the physical confrontation, said Ashokumar.
After some time four cadres of the RPF came to the room and asked the students to return the gun.
However as the gun was not returned, they started beating up all the students, said Ashokumar and added that he was taken away later.
Ashokumar said that as president of MUSU he could not control the situation that erupted at his office and expressed regret over the incident.
The MUSU president also disclosed that the RPF had at first wanted to talk to him alone but he had insisted on the presence of the others and hence called them to his room.
To a question, Ashokumar said that if the situation is allowed to fester it would generate more antagonism and added that a literary meet is a literary meet and there is no harm in organising such a function.
However since there is a body called the Council, he cannot take such a decision alone, he maintained.
He added that he will discuss the matter with the Councillors and hold the function.
