Imphal, June 27:
Personnel of 12 Grenadier allegedly shot dead a person after picking him up from his residence at Leingangpokpi, 10 kms east of Jiribam Police Station at about 3.45 am today.
The victim is identified as one Nameirakpam Mohon alias Kuber (36) s/o N Khambaton of Leingangpokpi.
PIB Defence Wing, when contacted, said that they have not been informed by the Army authority of the incident.
Ruling out any underground connection, the family members informed that Mohon was picked up by the Army.
However, police claimed that Mohon had close connection with the underground activists though he himself might not be a member of any underground organization.
As per the reports provided by the Army to the Jiribam Police Station, underground activists who were hiding fired at the Army personnel while they were conducting, operation at Leingangpokpi area at about 3.45 am today.
Army personnel also retaliated the firing and killed one of the underground activists at the spot.
One country made pistol loaded with four live rounds of ammunition and a Kenwood wireless set have recovered from the link underground activist.
The body has been handed over to the family members after a post-mortem.
There were five bullets marks on his body, one each on his right shoulder, chest and stomach and two others on hid left thigh.
Meanwhile, the person who was shot at his legs by some unidentified persons at Wabagai Kadajit Turel Maning, 6 kms south-west of Kakching Police Station at about 9 o'clock last night has succumbed to his injuries today.
The deceased is identified as Elangbam Jiten (35) of Hiyanglam Awang Leikai.
Though the unidentified gunmen shot at his legs with no obvious intention of killing him, Jiten likely to have succumbed due to excessive bleeding from the wounds..
