Ten persons including students were killed and scores including women were injured when police opened fire on protestors at Chandmari Ground in Tura (Meghalaya) today.
Curfew has been imposed in the town.
The incident occurred at 11 am at Chandmari ground when members of the Joint Action Committee, a conglomerate of Garo Students' Union (GSU) and Garo Hills� Citizen Forum (GHCF) were fired upon after they defied prohibitory orders of the district administration to hold a public rally there.
The protestors gathered at the Chandmari ground and started �pelting stones� at security forces in which many senior police official including the Additional Superintendent of Police West Garo hills were injured.
Initial reports had it that the police subsequently opened fire in which three students were killed and five others were injured.
Later on it has been confirmed that the death toll has risen to ten.
Meghalaya Home Minister Mukul Sangma said that the �situation is being reviewed� adding that the police opened fire only after �heavy pelting of stones� on security personnel and the District Magistrate, in which �many senior police officers were injured�.
The Meghalaya Director General of Police, WL Marbaniang stated that as per initial �three people died while five others were injured,� in the police firing, adding that reports leading to the firing are still being gathered.
The ten persons killed are yet to be identified till the filing of this story.
According to initial reports, the district administration had clamped 144 CrPC and forbid holding of rally called by the JAC in protest against the State Level Committee to �revamp and restructure� the Meghalaya Board of School Education.
JAC president, Rabben Sangma met the district administration on Thursday last to pursue with the authorities to allow holding of the rally.
The district authorities turned down the request �fearing disruption in law and order situation�.
Defying the orders the JAC marched to the ground and when confronted by the police preventing them to proceed ahead after which the protestors started pelting stones on security personnel.
The JAC have called the rally today to protest against the implementation of the State Level Committee�s (SLC) report on MBoSE by the Government in toto.
The JAC are opposing the proviso in which a regional office headed by a director at Shillong has been implemented as per the SLC report.
