Imphal, October 24 2008:
Casualty Department of the RIMS was closed for about seven hours today following a row between IRB personnel and doctors on duty in the Casualty at about 12.45
this morning.
One Jemadar of the 6th IRB posted in RIMS reportedly threatened the doctors saying that he would shoot them.
Consequent upon the row and threat by the IRB Jemadar, the doctors decided to close OPD and Casualty indefinitely in protest.
But this was sorted out following an understanding between the two sides.
Speaking to reporters at his office, RIMS Superintendent Dr Y Mohen said that the amicable settlement between the two sides has saved a great deal of difficulties likely to be faced by patients when the OPD and Casualty are closed.
At about midnight yesterday, a police commando personnel was brought to RIMS Casualty Department by his colleagues clad in civilian dress in connection with bleeding ear.
One Dr Uttam, a native of Tripura, on duty at Casualty at that time suggested that the patient (commando personnel) be examined by an ENT doctor.
At this, one Jemadar of the 6th IRB who was among the commando personnel clad in civilian dress allegedly drew out his gun and threatened to shoot Dr Uttam and other doctors present there at the moment, conveyed Dr Mohen.
The threat prompted the doctors to launch an indefinite ceasework strike.
But the strike has been cut short to seven hours following an amicable settlement with the DGP, Imphal West SP and CO of the 6th IRB, he said.
