Sensing the threat to the identity and integrity of Manipur in case Manipur, Tripura, Lushai Hills (present Mizoram), Cachar district of Assam and Karbi Anglong were merged together to create Poorvanchal State, a huge protest meeting was organised by Irabot under the aegis of the Krishak Sabha at MDU Hall on September 21, 1948 against the design of the Govt of India.
Of the large number of people coming to attend the meeting from different places of Manipur, farmers from Lamlai side were blocked and thrashed by police at Pungdongbam resulting in severe injuries including death of many.
From this day, Hijam Irabot went underground.
Ultimately the plan of the Government of India to create Poorvanchal State was defeated by the people's movement led by Irabot.
The commemorative function was graced by titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba and LOUSHAL president Dr K Bheigyachandra as chief guest and president respectively.
