The tension-filled atmosphere that had been gripping this commercial border town for the past eight days in the aftermath of recovery of Sunil Agarwal lifeless body eased to a certain extent as the indefinite bandh call has been lifted with immediate effect after a six point memorandum of understanding was signed between representatives of the State Government and JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Sunil Agarwal this evening.
The agreement prescribes booking and punishment of those involved in the abduction and killing of Sunil Agarwal; police inquiry be initiated to ascertain if there was any lapses on the part of the police; to increase strength of IRB personnel at Moreh; immediate lifting of ongoing agitation/bandh; compensation for properties damaged/lost during the agitation as per value to be assessed by police; and payment of ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh to the bereaved family member.The MoU was finally reached after a marathon meeting at the IB of Forest Range Office which began early morning and continued till about 6.30 pm.
While the Govt side was represented by MLAs Bijoy Koijam, K Ranjit and Thangso Baite the JAC was led by its convenor Sh Santosh and vice president of AMSU (Hqs) I James Bond.
Moreh ADC TH Chothe and DIG (R-I) C Doungel were also signatories of the MoU.
In another development, even as hectic parleys were on to finalise the deal, some unidentified persons resorted to stone pelting at Ward No 7, near Nepali Basti.
While a young girl reportedly suffered minor injuries, local sources contended that they heard some 2/3 shots in the air.
