Imphal, April 06 2009: Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur Branch hasprovided relief materials to the displaced Zeliangrong villagers who fled North Cachar Hills district of Assam following threat to their lives and are currently taking shelter at different parts of Tousem Sub-division in Tamenglong district .

Officials of the Red Cross Society, Manipur Branch handed over the relief materials through the representatives of the Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur (ZSUM)and All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA) during a simple function at the office of the Branch here today.

It is said that along with the relief materials worth Rs 49,870 provided by the Red Cross Society, a joint team of ZSUM and AMADA would leaving Imphal on April 8 at 6 am carrying other essential commodities and distributed the same among the displaced people at Tousem sub-division the following day.

Talking to mediapersons on the sideline of the handing over the relief materials, secretary of Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur Branch Dr M Lala said that the relief materials have been arranged to help around 600 Zeliangrong villagers who fled North Cachar Hills district of Assam and taken refuged at Tousem sub-division atleast to some extent.

The relief materials provided by the Manipur Branch of the humanitarian socity include 250 blankets, 600 toothbruches, 300 toothpaste, 264 soaps, candles, matchboxes, etc.

The total estimate of the relief materials provided is said to be around Rs 49,870 .

After fleeing North Cachar Hills district, the displaced villagers are currently taking shelters at the makeshift relief camps set up for them at Mandu, Tousem, Faklong, Pumdam, Deigei, Njukuak, etc.

ZSUM secretary Manjabung Gangmei pointed out that people of Tousem Sub-Division have been facing lot of difficulties following the phenomonon of Bamboo flowers.

Inspite of that they are giving shelter to around 600 Zeliangrong brethrens who have fled their homes and hearths.

Unfortunately, the Government has not ensure any security for these displaced people, he lamented.
