Imphal, June 02:
Decrying the indifferent attitude of the State Government to the demand for providing adequate security escort, transporters plying along National Highway 39 to ferry essential commodities every day have ceased service with immediate effect from today.
Around 200 trucks under the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union have remained stranded at Sekmai Bazar since early morning today after the Government failed to respond to the demand for providing adequate security escort.
Talking to mediapersons at Sekmai Bazar later in the afternoon, the aggrieved transporters and drivers said that they decided to cease service after the Government did not send any escort party to accompany them in ferrying the essential goods.
They informed that the trucks set out from Imphal for lifting essential goods from outside Manipur in the morning today along with an escort party.
But on reaching Sekmai Bazar, the escort party allegedly told the drivers that they have come not to escort the transporters but on some purpose of their own.
In case they want to go ahead then they can follow them, said the security personnel before speeding away.
Later on the authorities concerned were contacted, but no security escort were detailed.
