Imphal, April 30:
This is not Ripley's Believe it Or Not, but a reality that is being enacted at the Moirang Purel Junior High School at Imphal East.
For the past three/four years, this school has been functioning under only three adhoc teachers and one non teaching staff after the Government transferred its Headmaster and eight other teachers some years back without sending any replacements.
Speaking to newsmen, the president of Moirangpurel Meira Paibi president, Th Samashakhi Devi said that ever since eight teachers of the school along with its Headmaster were transferred some years back with no replacements, most of the students have opted for private schools.
Even the adhoc teachers are being paid voluntarily by the local people.
Moreover since there is no relevant authority to issue the transfer certificate of students who want to opt out, many of them have had to discontinue their studies, she said.
At the only LP school there only two teachers, said the meira paibi leader and added that the kitchen for the mid-day meal scheme is also yet to be constructed.
The kitchen constructed at the Junior High School also does not conform to any standard, she maintained.
The only non-teaching staff at the school, but who nevertheless has been teaching the students for the last 14 years, Laishram Ito said that though there are supposed to be 12 to 15 teachers at the school at the present there are only 3 adhoc teachers.
This came about after eight teachers including the Headmaster were transferred some years back without any replacements being sent, he informed.
The nearest other Government Junior High Schools are located at Lamlai and Nongpok Kakching, he said and added that even admitting the young students to these schools is a big problem as they have to travel 10 kms daily to attend classes.
Of the three adhoc teachers none teach Maths or Science, he informed and added that given the situation he along with the teachers are trying their best to teach all the subjects to the young students.
President of the Tumukhong Moirangpurel branch of MAFYF, K Ranjit said that a memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister yesterday by the Village Development Committee when he came to inspect the Khuga dam and added that MAFYF had also submitted a memorandum to the CM on April 24.If the Government does not take up adequate measures to better the lot of the school immediately, then the students would be constrained to initiate protests from May 3/4.The students will also return their text books by May 6.The Andro AC MLA will also be socially boycotted if no corrective measures are taken up, he added.
The PHSC has also been lying defunct for the last 10 years with only the chowkidar and an attendant, said the local people.
